How to Apply

1. Create your Profile

Before applying for any job with the state, you’ll need to create a profile through CalCareers. This is where you will take examinations and search and apply for jobs. Once your profile is created you can search for examinations.

2. Search for Exams

Every California state job requires you to take and pass an exam. Once you’ve created your profile in CalCareers, you’ll need to locate the examination for the job type (classification) for which you want to apply.

Exam bulletins for all CRD jobs are located on CalCareers. Many of the state exams are questionnaires that assess your qualifications.

    Make sure to:

  • Include all relevant work and volunteer experience related to the job classification.
  • If applicable, consult your college transcripts to include number of units or classes you have taken on related topics.

For more information on the exam process check out Work4CA’s What are Exams video.

Additional Information

Limited Examination and Appointment Program (LEAP)

LEAP is an optional pathway to state civil service for people with disabilities. LEAP is an alternative to the traditional testing process, allowing applicants to demonstrate knowledge, skills, and abilities through on-the-job testing. For more information visit our Career Resources page.

Are you a Veteran?

Veterans’ Preference is an assistance program for veterans, veteran widows and widowers, and spouses of 100% disabled veterans who seek employment with the state. For more information visit our Career Resources page.

3. Apply

Once you have passed your examination, you can search CalCareers for the right opportunity for you.

  • You can create and save electronic templates of the application template (form STD. 678) within your CalCareers account. You can use these templates when applying for jobs.
  • The application is a formal document that shows how you qualify for the position. Make sure it is a current and accurate representation of your qualifications.
  • Be sure to focus on aspects of your background that match the requirements of the job for which you are applying.
