About the Civil Rights Council
The Civil Rights Council is a public body of seven volunteer members appointed by the Governor, confirmed by the Senate, and housed within the California Civil Rights Department (CRD). The Council’s statutory duties include:
- Promulgating regulations interpreting California civil rights laws enforced by CRD
- Creating and providing technical assistance to civil rights advisory bodies throughout the state
- Holding hearings and issuing reports to advance civil rights
The activities of the Civil Rights Council are open to the public. The Council was created in 2013 as a successor to the former Fair Employment and Housing Commission.
